Sally Rooney has said she would be “pleased and proud” to have her latest novel Beautiful World

Rooney has turned down a request from an Israeli-based publisher to translate Beautiful World, Where Are You into Hebrew, citing her support of the BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions). However, she said in a statement that if a BDS-compliant translation could be done, she would be “pleased and proud” to sell the Hebrew translation rights.

Sally Rooney says it would be “an honour” to have her new novel translated into Hebrew. “If I can find a way to sell these rights that is compliant with the BDS movement’s institutional boycott guidelines, I will be very pleased and proud to do so.”

Sally Rooney, acclaimed author of ‘Normal People’, has refused a Hebrew translation request from a publisher linked with Israel’s defence ministry. She says the Hebrew translation rights for her new book are still available to those “compliant with BDS”.
