China continues to strengthen its nuclear arsenal and could have 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030, a new Defense Department report says. The country has refused to join arms control talks, arguing that the U.S. and Russia have far larger arsenals.
The Pentagon is warning of China’s explosive growth in its nuclear arsenal, claiming the country could increase nuclear warheads five-fold by 2030. “The explosive growth… can only be, as I describe, breathtaking,” says the commander of U.S. nuclear forces.
The latest estimate by the US Defense Department suggests growing concern in Washington over the potential for rapid growth of China’s nuclear arsenal as the rivalry between the two countries intensifies in various fields.
What people are saying?
RRDaNerd For context, China currently has around 300 nuclear warheads, the United States over 6000. China also has four times the population of the US, a dozen more neighbors, US military bases surrounding it, and US aircraft carriers sailing along its coast.
Willian Well when China starts flying it’s jets inside Taiwan’s airspace, you do get some heads heads turning in Taipei. Nuclear weapons are nuclear weapons, 1 or 2 can essentially destroy a country. Should be controlled, yet China opts out of any sort of agreement like Russia and the US.
