A man in his 50s is expected to appear in court in connection to a fire that burned down a South African parliament building.

A massive fire in South Africa’s houses of parliament in Cape Town has completely burned down the National Assembly where parliamentarians sit. A man has been arrested, he is due in court Tuesday.

A man was due in court on Tuesday after a massive fire completely destroyed South Africa’s national assembly, officials said, as the blaze at the historic legislature continued to rage.

At least 70 firefighters are currently fighting the blaze in the Parlimentary precinct after a fire broke around 6am. Substantial damage reported by officials but no injuries or fatalities confirmed.

A tired refrain perhaps, but national government is responsible for securing Parliament. It’s a National Key Point after all – it’s in the name. CoCTs involvement is likely strictly limited to supplying the firefighters after the fact.

It’s been a while when it was suggested that the Parliament should be relocated to Pretoria they are just having their delay tactics let’s hope they are going to listen now.
