Ethiopia’s parliament confirmed incumbent Abiy Ahmed as prime minister for a five-year term, cementing his power domestically amid mounting international concern of his government’s handling of the conflict in northern Ethiopia.
After a landslide victory in June’s Ethiopian elections which took place with prominent opposition either boycotting or jailed, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has just been officially sworn in for his 5 year term in office. He had been ruling on an interim basis since April 2018.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was sworn in for a new five-year term on Monday. Abiy’s Prosperity Party won the country’s parliamentary elections earlier this year, winning 410 of the 436 contested parliamentary seats. The re-appointment comes amid international concern over the governments handling of the northern Ethiopian conflict.
