Indonesia is facing a surge in COVID-19 infections

Indonesia has reported more than 54,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time, surpassing recent daily infections in India, and becoming Asia’s new virus hotspot. Officials fear that the more highly transmissible delta variant is now spreading.

The data also showed 991 new deaths, bringing the total number to 69,210. Indonesia has the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths from COVID-19 in Southeast Asia.
