Biden says US and China must ‘not veer into conflict’: US president Joe Biden has told Chinese leader Xi Jinping that he hoped to have a candid conversation about human rights and security issues as the two began a meeting meant to lower tensions between.
A senior Biden administration official said the Beijing Olympics did not come up in the 3+ hour Biden-Xi meeting. The virtual summit went longer than expected and the two leaders had a “respectful” discussion but didn’t stick to script, the official said.
At the Biden-Xi meeting, the US President reiterated Washington’s opposition to change in Taiwan’s status quo, while his Chinese counterpart warned that the support for Taiwanese independence would be ‘like playing with fire’.
What people are saying?
zz All China want is that America promise not to back Taiwan, acknowledge that there is only one China, Taiwan belongs to China, and stay out of its way of reunification. This is China’s core interest, not trade or whatever and China got what it wants.
Duckie At least we know Biden isn’t giving away trade secrets, or negotiating for his own family at the expense of the United States. I believe Biden‘s intentions are good and appreciate him attempting to create a better relationship with China.
