The Finnish president and prime minister have announced their intention to apply for NATO membership

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin announced on Thursday their intention to submit an application to join the NATO military alliance “without delay”. Russia, which shares an 810 mile border with Finland, classified the country’s decision as a threat.

Pres. Biden “underscored his support for NATO’s Open Door policy and for the right of Finland and Sweden to decide their own future, foreign policy, and security arrangements” in call with with Swedish, Finnish leaders.

Finland’s membership in NATO would signal the end of over 70 years of Moscow’s most enduring policy. This is a humiliation for Vladimir Putin.
