Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office in Beijing, said on Wednesday “Taiwan has no right to join the United Nations.” This comes after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for Taiwan’s “meaningful participation” at the UN on Tuesday. China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province, argues that a 1971 UN resolution gives it the sole right to represent the island.
Taiwan has “no right to join the United Nations”, Beijing official says. “Taiwan is part of China.” The response comes after US Secretary of State Blinken urged greater inclusion of Taiwan in the UN – 50 years after the UN voted to seat Beijing and boot out Taipei.
Taiwan wants a greater role in United Nations bodies, including the World Health Organization. But China claims it has the sole right to represent the island internationally.
What people are saying?
Secretary Antony Blinken Taiwan is a critical partner to the United States and a democratic success story. Taiwan should have meaningful participation in the @UN system, especially as we face an unprecedented number of global challenges.
ShanghaiPanda The United States can initiate a vote on this matter at the UN to see how many countries on China side, and how many countries on the US side. The key is, does the US dare? As far as I know, over these years, when China and the US faced off at the UN, the US never won!
