US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has resigned and will be replaced with Thomas West following the Taliban takeover of the country. The Afghan-born diplomat previously held US ambassador positions to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations and has been US envoy under the Trump and Biden administrations.
Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan, is stepping down after more than three years on the job. His departure follows the American withdrawal from the country.

Sharif Hassan Zalmay Khalilzad has resigned. He was the mastermind behind the Doha deal which paved the way for the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, and the architect of Bonn agreement which was made after the US and northern alliance toppled the very same group – Taliban — two decades ago.
