US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has resigned

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has resigned and will be replaced with Thomas West following the Taliban takeover of the country. The Afghan-born diplomat previously held US ambassador positions to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations and has been US envoy under the Trump and Biden administrations.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan, is stepping down after more than three years on the job. His departure follows the American withdrawal from the country.
